As any significant honors show nears, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
