Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
