Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
